Revolution Modern Dance is an exploratory project with the ultimate goal of enhancing the dance community in Frederick, Maryland. We are driven by the following values:

Dance must be accessible.

Dance is for everyone. We remove barriers to dance education by offering affordably priced classes that do not require experience and do not require a contract or prepayment for registration. We offer a mixture of traditional guided classes and less structured creative time to support dance as a fitness activity and dance as a creative art which are both valid approaches.

Dance education must emphasize learning to respect boundaries.

Dance can be emotionally and physically strenuous. We aim to create an environment where dancers have space to listen to their bodies and their thoughts first, and then are supported in the expression of their limits. Dancers are not made to feel guilty for missing a class or sitting out on an exercise to rest. Emotionally intense exercises include facilitated group discussion where appropriate to consolidate responses.

Physical contact through partnered choreography, improvisation exercises, and social dance sessions is always voluntary. Personal boundaries may vary depending on the partner or other circumstances and are also understood to evolve over time. Group discussion before and after contact exercises is used to empower dancers to recognize and articulate their limits.

Dance is a community.

Just as diversity of individuals improves each dance group, diversity of dance groups and styles improves the entire art form. We aim to provide opportunities for interaction between dancers of various backgrounds in Frederick, MD which will improve awareness of available resources and talent.

Diversity among the arts is equally important! Dance does not exist in isolation; dance is part of the greater artistic and creative communities. When possible, support and collaboration with local visual and performing artists is a priority. For example: partnering with the Frederick County Public Libraries to provide free programming or bringing dancers out to support live music performances at the Sky Stage. As part of this ongoing commitment, Revolution Modern Dance also formally licenses music for classes and events which guarantees that non-local musicians are also compensated for our use of their art.
